Youth Mediation Week 2009

27 Aug 2009 Posted in Event

MEDIA RELEASE

Youth Mediation Week

organised by the Community Mediation Centre

NTUC Centre, 7 and 8 September 2009

The Community Mediation Centre (CMC) has been organising an annual Youth Mediation Forum since 2006, to provide a platform for students to gain insight into amicable conflict resolution through mediation as a useful life-skill. Last year, more than 500 student leaders from 48 secondary schools in Singapore participated in the Forum. Attending students and teachers enjoyed the experience and found the activities relevant and useful.

2.       This year, CMC has expanded this annual event to include a Debate Challenge and a Sing/Cheer Competition to form Youth Mediation Week with the theme: Talk It Out! The debate preliminaries held on Saturday, 22 August 2009 at Nanyang Girls’ High School saw 8 teams entering the semi-finals of the Debate Challenge to be held on Monday, 7 September 2009 at NTUC Centre. The finals of the Sing/Cheer Competition will also be held on 7 September 2009.

3.       The activities culminate in the annual Youth Mediation Forum on Tuesday, 8 September 2009, at NTUC Centre with an expected turn-out of about 500 secondary school student leaders. Senior Minister of State for Law and Home Affairs, Assoc. Prof. Ho Peng Kee, will deliver the opening address as the Guest of Honour.

4.       Highlights of this year’s Forum programme include an exciting array of activities: a new game show “Win, Lose or Mediate”, the winning performances from the Twist and Shout Cheer competition, as well as the finals of the Debate Challenge. Details of the Forum and programme are enclosed at Annex A.

5.       For media enquiries concerning the Youth Mediation Forum, please contact Ms Kelly Then, Deputy Manager, Community Mediation Unit, at DID: 6227 9676 or at email: Kelly_THEN@mlaw.gov.sg.

6.       To register your attendance for the Forum, please send in the enclosed Media Registration form (Annex B) by 5pm, Wednesday, 2 September 2009.
